Experiment Outside During Backyard Science Days
Special feature: live bat show!

One remedy for hot summer days are cool science experiments you can perform right outside your door! From noon to 4:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday, August 12 and 13, 2006, the Maryland Science Center will celebrate Backyard Science Days, is filled with fun, hands-on activities and the thrilling live bat show, "Bat Encounter."

The Maryland Science Center's Traveling Science Program team will conduct cool experiments with visitors – like the Supersonic Pencil and the Electric Pickle – and perform science demonstrations with typical household items. Visitors will create natural art to take home by placing leaves, shells, or other objects on photosensitive paper that allows the rays of the Sun to make shadowgrams. Other activities include stomp rockets, chalk art, plus the infamous Mentos and Diet Coke geyser experiment!

The highlight of each day will be the "wild" side of Backyard Science Days – a live bat show with international bat celebrity Rob Mies. His "Bat Encounter" show introduces the nocturnal strategies, habitats, and benefits of bat like the endangered Golden Bat, U.S. Bat, Straw-Colored Flying Fox, and the Gigantic Flying Fox which boasts a wingspan over six-feet! Mies shares the secret of bat navigation by using a bat detector to let the audiences hear a live bat's echolocation.

Backyard Science Days is free with paid admission to the Maryland Science Center. The Maryland Science Center is located at 601 Light Street at Baltimore's Inner Harbor. For information and tickets, visit www.marylandsciencecenter.org or call the 24-Hour Information Line at 410-685-5225.

The Maryland Science Center at Baltimore's Inner Harbor is visited by more than 500,000 people each year. Popular exhibits include: Dinosaur Mysteries with more than a dozen full-size dinosaurs and interactive paleontology activities; an exploration of the day in the life of the human body in Your Body: The Inside Story; and dozens of interactive experiments in Newton's Alley. Other popular attractions in the museum include the Kids Room, the five-story St. John Properties IMAX Theater, and the world-famous Davis Planetarium.
