Two Baltimore Students Awarded Scholarships
High School Program Recreated for Maryland Science Center 30th Anniversary

As part of its year-long celebration of its 30th anniversary at Baltimore's Inner Harbor, the Maryland Science Center has reinstituted its scholarship program, and has awarded two $1,500 scholarships to Baltimore City public school graduates.

Blair Feet and Deron Weaver, both 2006 graduates of Polytechnic Institute, have been named 2006 Maryland Science Center Scholars. Blair will attend Morgan State University in the Fall to major in engineering; Deron will attend LeTourneau University and will major in mechanical engineering.

The Maryland Science Center Scholarship honors Dr. H. Bentley Glass, who established the program with an endowment in 1969. The scholarship supports economically disadvantaged and academically capable students who intend to pursue a college major in science, mathematics or engineering. Applicants must demonstrate academic commitment and excellence, outstanding leadership, and service to the community.

Blair and Deron were honored at a special ceremony at the Maryland Science Center on Saturday, June 17, 2006.

"Renewing this scholarship program is an appropriate and exciting way for the Maryland Science Center to both celebrate it's past and prepare for our future," said Van Reiner, president. Honoring two graduates of the Baltimore City Public School System demonstrates the institution's commitment to make science education accessible to everyone."

The Maryland Science Center stimulates and cultivates awareness, interest and understanding of science through exciting interactive experiences and educational programming. More than 500,000 people visit the Inner Harbor location each year, where they learn about the Earth and the environment and are awed by 12 life-size dinosaurs in Dinosaur Mysteries, explore a day in the life of the human body in Your Body: The Inside Story, experiment with dozens of interactive activities in Newton's Alley, thrill to adventure in the five-story St. John Properties IMAX Theater, travel through space in the Davis Planetarium, and engage younger children in the Kids Room. The Maryland Science Center reaches an additional 100,000 Maryland residents each year with its interactive programs delivered at schools, community centers, and public events.
