MARCH 7 2007 For more information: Todd Scott - Himmelrich, Inc. Maryland Science Center Offers Summer Camp Program This summer, the Maryland Science Center will offer Camp MSC, a variety of full day and half day programs for children and family. In July, Camp MSC includes week-long, interactive experiences for children ages 4-13 that explore such topics as space, dinosaurs, and the human body. All full day programs include lunch and a special weekly field trip. Daily after-care programs are also available, with options for early drop-off and late pick-up. One of the choices for Camp MSC's youngest campers, ages 4-6, is the half-day program based on the popular books by Eric Carle that explore the crazy critters who live in our backyards including fireflies, caterpillars, ladybugs and beetles. Campers will conduct live insect inspections, discover what makes each one unique, participate in movement activities and produce insect art. In Dinosaurs Rock, just one of the full day programs for campers ages 6-8, children will discover why Tyrannosaurus rex may not have been a fast runner, and learn how scientists use information about living animals to explain how extinct animals survived in their habitats. Other activities include the design-o-dino costume parade and the dinosaur stomp dance party. Dinosaurs Rock also includes a field trip to the Smithsonian Institute Museum of Natural History for a dinosaur hunting expedition, and a behind-the-scenes visit with the latest in fossilized bones, mummies, and dinosaur dig treasures. SCIGIRLS is a week of camp just for girls ages 11-13, designed and taught by young women. Campers will conduct experiments focused on health and nutrition in order to understand how these choices affect their quality of life. They will also evaluate the current health of the Chesapeake Bay, and design experiments with robotics using the basics of engineering. Campers will explore how their basic interests in earth, space and biological sciences can translate into career opportunities; the last day of the session will include a visit to university laboratories to see working science in action or a visit to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The Family Space Exploration Series is an inter-generational experience for adults and children under the age of seven. Families will explore the sun, moon, planets and stars by making sunspot maps, observing the stars and planets in the Davis Planetarium, looking through the MSC rooftop telescope, and assembling their own planetary robotic explorers in SpaceLink. Fees for the camp are: Full Day Program (includes Session and Lunch): $265 per child per session; $250 for members. Full Day Working Parent Package (includes Session, Lunch, and Extended Care - both a.m. and p.m.): $390 per child per session; $375 for members. Half Day Programs: $105 per child per session; $90 for members. Half Day Extended Care (a.m. only): $155 per child per session; $140 for members. Night Program: $105 per person per session; $90 for members. For information and Camp MSC advance registration, visit www.marylandsciencecenter.org or call 410-545-2980. The Maryland Science Center at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is visited by more than 550,000 people each year. Popular exhibits include: Dinosaur Mysteries which features more than a dozen full-size dinosaurs and interactive paleontology activities, an exploration of the day in the life of the human body in Your Body: The Inside Story, and add... dozens of interactive experiments in Newton’s Alley. Other popular attractions in the museum include the Kids Room, the five-story St. John Properties IMAX Theater, and the world-famous Davis Planetarium.
