DESIGNING Science
2008 Workshop Descriptions

The goal of the Camp-In program is to inspire children to discover the excitement of science through fun, hands-on activities in an informal setting. It is hoped that Camp-In will provide a positive environment that stimulates exploration and inquiry, and promotes the idea that science is a part of our daily lives. The 2008 workshops will cover the following topics, briefly described below, though material is subject to change as the workshops develop.

Kids can really get their hands on the fun at the Maryland Science Center as they participate in these three hands-on workshops.

TARZAN'S TREE HOUSE
Tarzan and his monkey friends need a new house. Campers will learn about the importance of structure, shape, and materials, as they budget, design, and build a tree house for the "Lord of the Jungle!"

READY, SET, BUILD!
Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! Campers will discuss various scientific principles engineers use when designing vehicles, such as friction and Newton's Laws of Motion. They will then design and build their own air-powered car and race them in the Maryland Science Center Derby!

MACHINE MANIA
Our world is full of inventions that make everyday life a little easier. Campers will discover how six simple machines can be combined to make all kinds of contraptions, as they participate in a creative machine marathon.
